How to measure for replacement porcelain parts
We have tried to give you as many measurements as possible to help you when searching for the correct replacement part for your doll.
Heads - are measured in overall height, this includes the shoulder plate if one is attached. We also supply you with the face height in the event that you change the style of your doll head, ie: insert a flange head instead of using a shoulder plate. Finally we supply you with the head circumference. These three sizes should ensure that you have chosen the correct replacement head for your doll
Legs - are measured by the overall length (including the grooved area), the top circumference and the foot length.
Arms are measured by the overall length (including the grooved area) and the top circumference.
Shoulder plates - are measured across the breadth as well as across the top opening where your head will sit.
Color is defined by white (untinted) pale bisque, medium bisque, brown bisque and black bisque.
In addition to size, be sure to check the style of the part. Does the arm contain the elbow or begin below the elbow? Does the leg begin below or above the knee. These variables make a big difference when attached to the cloth area of your doll.
Attaching Porcelain Parts
As most porcelain dolls are decorative, you can take some short cuts when attaching new porcelain parts.
For heads that are attached at the neck with a flange, tie wraps are strong and effective in getting the new head back on tightly. For heads that include a shoulder plate, you have two options. The first is used when there are sewing holes visible on the actual shoulder plate. Use a strong cord to sew the head onto a cloth body. If no holes are visible, then strong white craft glue, or hot glue can be used to permanently attach a shoulder plate to a cloth body.
For arms and legs, use a seam ripper to gently and carefully open the seam where the original limbs meet the porcelain part. Remove the old damaged part. Insert the new part into the same opening. Using a clear white craft glue such as tacky glue and put a generous amount around the entire top of the new porcelain piece. Position into the opening. Sew the seam shut again and then wrap white thread on the outside around the groved area. Wrap generously, and tie off. Once the glue dries you will have a very strong repair.
